We provide a wide variety of healthy plants, including houseplants, at attractive prices and offer expert consultative gardening advice with each sale. All of our plants are purchased from state-certified nursery suppliers located within our local gardening zone to ensure minimum plant shock in transition from the growers to our customers.
The friendliness and helpful in-depth knowledge of our staff sets us apart from many other nurseries. We we view ourselves as “Solvers of Problems and Sellers of Solutions.”
We proudly serve Columbus, Tryon, Saluda and all of Polk County, North Carolina, as well as Landrum and our other communities in South Carolina.
Meet the Staff
Jeanine is the third owner of The Garden Patch, taking over the business as of January 2008. She has had a long love affair with plants – indoor and outdoor. In Illinois, she completed both the Master Gardener and Advanced Master Gardener programs with the University of Illinois, served as president of a local garden club and served on the Illinois state board of The Garden Clubs of Illinois. When she moved to Columbus, North Carolina, in 2005, she decided to continue expanding her knowledge and familiarize herself with the climatic differences, so she also completed the Master Gardener course in Polk County. She has continued to further educate herself about plants through seminars, literature and books. Most recently, she has been certified by the State of North Carolina as a Certified Plant Professional. (This certification is earned only after exhaustive study and extensive testing). Many have found her to be a fountain of expert information and advice when discussing landscaping ideas as well as plant selection and care. She personally visits the certified growers who supply The Garden Patch and she individually selects many of the plants we sell. She also inspects each incoming shipment to help ensure vigorous and healthy stock and supervises their maintenance while in The Garden Patch care. All the supplier-growers are in the local growing region, so all of the plants sold at the Garden Patch have been climatized. All of the Garden Patch suppliers have been state certified to provide pest and disease free plants.
Rick retired from university life but wants to continue working in a seasonal job with outdoor and plant interaction. He has specialized in aquaculture, but also has broad overall plant knowledge. He has become a wonderful addition to our business and has gradually assumed more sales responsibility. We get lots of positive customer feedback about Rick’s precise advice and friendly demeanor.
This tarheel has gathered, respected and savored best practices from experiences as a teacher, coach, athletic trainer and golf professional; drawn wisdom from studies of performance psychology, holistic healing and leadership; worked for three terrific golf course superintendents with opportunities to interact with horticulturalists; and banked bullet points from working in other or similar retail settings. Yes, (I am) fortunate to work with Jeanine and Rick as the senior rookie benefitting from their plant expertise. I am open to lifelong learning and committed to being patient with each person, discerning and attentive to individual needs.
